Uncle Dave was a jovial, benevolent, at times grumpy presence throughout childhood - full of practical advice and quick with a quip. What he couldn’t do with a piece of string wasn’t worth knowing. The perfect foyle to Jan’s fiery Benstead temperament…
I still remember one Christmas when everyone came to stay at our house in Anlaby Road. Jan & Dave slept on an air bed in my room, and the following morning he woke up a very sleepy Jan with his fists, mock-boxing her, saying ‘Wake up, it’s Boxing Day!’
